About this Archive Catalogue

Lorton & Derwent Fells Local History Society has a large and growing archive of maps, books, documents, photos etc. concerning the local community and its history. This on-line catalogue gives you a means of finding what we have in the archive that may interest you.

There should be a catalogue record for every item in the archive. Each catalogue record has a unique Reference, which identifies the item in the Archive. Some items, such as digital photographs and sound recordings, may not have a physical existence, and are only 'on-line', but for the most part each catalogue record describes a physical object.

Each catalogue record has a Description of the item, and it's Format (Map, Book, Photo etc). The volunteer cataloguer who wrote the record may also have recorded a Subject, Place and Date for the item, but not all records have these.

Some records include digital images of the documents or photos they describe. As the Society is planning to digitise much of it's collection, more of these will become available on-line through the catalogue in the future.

Researchers who would like to view any items from the archive should contact us at derekdenman@btinternet.com.

Help with searching

Start on the Basic Search page.

To find items that interest you, type a word or name into the search box. You can also restrict your search to a particular format, so, for example, if you're just looking for maps, select 'Map' in the Format box.

Then click on the 'Run your search' button.
If you just click on the button without putting anything in any of the boxes, you'll get a list of all the records in the catalogue - there may be quite a lot!

The system will search all the Descriptions for the word or name you entered, and return a list of records (if any are found). You can then click on the 'Reference' on the left side of the list to see all the details about that item.

If the record describes a digital document you can click on the 'Download' or 'View' button. Some documents are only available to Society members. The document will be downloaded and/or opened for you to read depending on your browser settings.

Advanced Search

This may be helpful if your search produces too many records to be useful. Clicking on Advanced Search button gives three extra selection boxes so you can restrict your search to a particular Subject, Place and/or Collection. Bear in mind that an item could come under more than one Subject and the cataloguer will have chosen the one they thought was the most appropriate.

When you get a list of results, you can sort it by clicking on the column headings.
